Custom Ear Molds

Hearing protection can be beneficial for work, sports, and leisure activities. However, not all hearing protection are equal. Some provide standard, generic protection, while custom ear molds can provide more accurate coverage. Custom ear molds offer a more advanced and personalized level of hearing protection.

Fort Bend Hearing offers a variety of custom ear molds for protection including earplugs for dentists, motorcyclists, musicians, hunters, and swimmers.

We also provide hearing device coupling, sleep plugs, and custom iPhone earbud plugs.

How are custom ear molds made?

During the fitting appointment, we will take unique molds of each ear using a piece of foam or cotton known as an otoblock and special impression material. Once we get the proper placement within the ear canal, a soft molding material will be gently syringed into the ear canal and outer bowl of each ear.

This material will gradually harden but no need to worry because the process is quick (around 5 minutes) and painless. Once the material has hardened, the impressions will be removed from the ears, packed, and shipped to the manufacturer.

Custom ear molds are specifically designed for our patient’s individual needs.

What is an earmold impression?

As the name implies, earmold impressions focus on the shape of the canal and the bowl of the outer ear. Ear impressions are used to create products that help people with hearing problems or protect their ears. An ear impression is made by injecting material into the ear canal and the area around the ear.

Do ear mold impressions hurt?

When the impression material enters your ears, you may feel some pressure in your ears. You may also feel a tickle in your throat. This is all normal and should only last for a short time.

Earmold impressions help get sound from the hearing aid into your ear. It also helps keep the hearing aid in place on your ear. A well-fitting earmould can help prevent feedback whistling from the hearing aid by preventing sound leakage.

What is the purpose of ear mold impressions?

Ear mold impressions exist to create an accurate and comfortable fit for individuals who need to wear custom ear protection or hearing aids.

If you wear hearing aids, a custom ear mold can help improve comfort and performance. A proper fit can also lower the likelihood of whistling or feedback from the hearing aid.

Overall, ear mold impressions help create custom-fit ear molds or earplugs that deliver a high-level of comfort and performance compared to generic options.

Types of Custom Ear Molds

Swim earplugs

These help protect the ears from bacteria and water while swimming. Swim earplugs are recommended for the following:

  • Adults and children who have chronic ear infections due to swimming
  • People who have had surgical procedure(s) in the ear
  • People who do not enjoy getting their ears wet when participating in water activities
  • Sleep Plugs

Custom hearing protection

Noise-induced hearing loss is one of the most common causes of hearing loss. NIHL can be prevented through the use of custom hearing protection.

Whether you are exposed to loud noises due to work or leisure, you need to keep in mind that anything above 85 decibels can cause permanent hearing damage.

Airplanes, lawnmowers, hairdryers, drills, and jackhammers are just some examples of several items that could damage hearing. The following occupations can benefit from custom hearing protection:

  • Carpenters
  • Construction workers
  • Musicians
  • Landscapers
  • Factory workers
  • Hunters
  • Dentists

Musicians’ earplugs

Musicians’ earplugs and in-ear monitors are a unique form of hearing protection. While protecting your hearing from noise damage, these products also maintain the integrity and quality of the original sound.

There are various musicians’ earplugs depending on the instruments, music, and vocals. Performers often prefer custom-made in-ear monitors as alternatives to earplugs because the former can provide high fidelity (hi-fi) music output.

Sleep plugs

Sleeping with earplugs can significantly improve sleep quality. This is because, for some people, sleep plugs are the only way to block out noise from a snoring partner, a noisy room, and the like.

The quality of sleep matters just as much as how much sleep one gets, which is why sleep plugs are considered a lifesaver for people who want to enjoy noise-free slumber.

There are many different types of sleep earplugs. The most common type is foam earplugs. They are easy to find and usually inexpensive.

Another option is moldable silicone putty. It is custom-made to fit your ears, and it provides good noise cancellation.
