Hearing Aid Repair & Cleaning

Hearing aids have evolved several times over since their invention in the 1800s. They have become smaller in size and have cutting-edge technology. Part of owning hearing devices and being a successful wearer involves regular maintenance along with hearing aid repair and cleaning. In most cases, hearing aid care and maintenance can be performed at home; however, there are instances where the audiologist or hearing care professional needs to perform a diagnostic hearing aid check and/or repair.

Hearing Aids: Common Troubleshooting Issues

The four most common issues hearing aid wearers experience are:

Hearing aids are not producing any sound or no power.

The most common reason why hearing aids are not producing sound may be linked to a plugged sound opening, or wax guard. If this is the case, replacement of the filter is an easy solution. Patients may also need to verify they are using new, unexpired batteries or that their hearing devices are fully charged and turned on.

Hearing aids are not loud enough.

The first thing we encourage patients to do is visually inspect and clean the device. Over time, dead skin, hair products, and other debris can build up over the microphone ports and cause the device to sound weak. For hearing aids with volume control, simply press the button or turn the wheel to make sure the volume is changing. Patients with Bluetooth-enabled devices can also use their app to manipulate volume.

Please call our office and schedule an appointment if you think your hearing has changed or if your device is not working appropriately.

Hearing aids sound distorted.

If stored incorrectly, hearing devices can be easily damaged. We encourage patients to keep hearing devices in a dry, safe place away from pets and children. Hearing devices are miniature computers and therefore should not be exposed to extreme temperatures, such as the inside of a car in the middle of hot, Houston summers!

If using disposable batteries, distortion can also be caused by damaged or corroded battery contacts. If this is the case, remove the battery and clean the contacts with a soft, dry cloth.

Please call our office to schedule an appointment if your device is not working appropriately.

Hearing aids produce a whistling or high-pitched squealing noise.

The squeaking or whistling noise from a hearing aid can be really disturbing. This annoying sound could be caused by feedback which occurs when the sound coming out of the hearing aid loops back into the hearing aid’s microphone.

To avoid or lessen feedback, here are some tips to follow:

  • Avoid pushing the hearing aid against a pillow, scarf, or hat
  • Position the tip of the hearing aid or earmold securely in the ear. Mispositioning the hearing aid can cause unnecessary feedback.
  • Keep the setting near its default if your hearing aids have volume control
