Originally, hearing devices were only categorized in two – prescription hearing aids and Personal Sound Amplification Products (PSAPs).
Prescription hearing aids are considered class-1 medical devices fully regulated by the FDA. True to its name, you need to have a prescription from a doctor to acquire one. Sometimes, insurance will cover prescription hearing aids, but it depends on the insurance policy and company.
Personal Sound Amplification Products (PSAPs) are not regulated by the FDA and perform far less than an actual prescription hearing aid.
Currently, there is another category pending approval from the FDA: over-the-counter hearing aids.
